Haipad A13 7″ Android 4.0 Tablet

$
0
0

Last week, the folks from Lazada sent over a new ICS tablet they’ve been selling in their online store for months. It’s the affordable, entry-level Haipad A13 which is manufactured in Shenzhen.

We did not really expect much from the Haipad but for the price tag, it’s got a good fighting chance when compared to the likes of the Kingcom Joypad, the CDR-King tablets and the many other China-branded ones in the market.

The Haipad A13 has the bare essentials — decent and slim form factor, capable processor, enough internal storage and support for expansion as well as a mature and capable operating system.

Haipad A13 specs:
7″ TFT display @ 800×480 pixel
BoxChip A13 / Cortex-A8 1~1.5GHz
8GB internal memory
up to 32GB SD/TF support
WiFi 802.11 b/g/n
3G module supports USB external
Has the OTG functions

I have yet to try that function which allows you to hook up a 3G USB dongle to the Haipad for mobile internet (it needs a microUSB adaptor for that). It also has USB-on-the-Go feature for attaching external storage.

The body of the tablet is slim but feels plasticky, with a semi-glossy finish. It doesn’t have that picture-frame look which many other entry-level tablets tend to look.

While the tablet runs on ICS, we notice a little bit of lag once in a while. Nothing too annoying but not really that smooth. COuld be a viable media player, ebook reader or simply just for the usual web surfing.

The Haipad A13 sells for Php4,289 over at Lazada (see listing here).

What we’re gonna do is just give away this review unit to readers of YugaTech. Just check out the Rafflecopter widget below to enter in the raffle.

There are lots of USB-powered devices out there, ranging from lamps, fans, to mini vacuum cleaners. If you frequent CDR-King then you know what I’m talking about. With the Axniper, this one takes it up a notch in terms of fun.

Axniper

This miniature mounted-sniper rifle fires 6mm airsoft rounds with a range of 8 meters (26 feet) and can be controlled through your laptop via a special software. In addition, it is equipped with a camera on top for extra accuracy. Watch the video below:

If you work in the office, this is a good way to kill time and test friendships. However, it looks like it’s only available in Japan with a price tag of almost $100.

You might also want to take a look at this USB-powered Missile Launcher which is available in Amazon for $40.

3D Printer now available at CD-R King for Php100K

Been itching to have a go at 3D printing but don’t know where to purchase a 3D printer here in the Philippines? Well, your search is over as CD-R King is now offering a 3D printer for Php100K.

cdrking_3dprinter

For the unacquainted, 3D printing “is a process of making a three-dimensional solid object of virtually any shape from a digital model.” It does this by adding successive layers of material in different shapes until it forms a 3D object. Watch the video below to better understand the process.

3D printers have been around for quite a while now but mostly for industrial and medical uses. DIY and hacker communities were then able to acquire a much affordable version of the tech to aid personal projects. It became controversial in countries like the U.S. when some users were able to 3D print gun components from firearm blueprints leaked online.

cdrking_3d_printer_1

But if you really want to give it a go for whatever purpose and you have money to burn, you can purchase one now from CD-R King (see listing here). The page only shows photos and the price so other details like specs, configuration, and warranty are still unknown.

Funny and amazing stuff about tech in the Philippines

From being the text messaging capital of the world to becoming one of the top IT outsourcing hubs in the planet, the Philippines has certainly achieved a lot especially when it comes to anything that involves tech. For that we’re going to list some of the funny and amazing stuff about the technology industry in the Philippines.

It’s one of the leading BPO hubs in the world

pp

The BPO industry is definitely flourishing in the Philippines. It’s the world’s leading call center destination and will account for around 10% of the country’s GDP according to the Information Technology and Business Processing Association of the Philippines (IBPAP). The industry is also expected to hit $25 billion in revenues in 2016. Manila also placed second in Tholon’s Top 100 Outsourcing Destinations for 2014.

We have amazing LTE speeds and coverage

iphone-5c-lte

Sometimes. Although our favorite telcos are busy rolling out LTE services and packages across the country, there areas that are still out of reach. The same thing can be said to 3G. In addition, the internet speeds do not always apply as advertised, unless you’re situated in an area approved by a Feng Shui expert to bring good luck and great LTE reception. In fact, OpenSignal even ranked the Philippines as one of the slowest in 4G speeds. To combat slow mobile internet, telcos have sought to ban unauthorized selling of repeaters and signal boosters, cracked down on hacked modems, and imposed….

FUP and Data caps

globe-fup

There’s a good chance that you’ve already heard about it, much worse, experienced it. If you want the juicy details you can read all about it here, here, and here. Although FUPs and data caps are not exclusive to the Philippines, we Filipinos love our unli-data as much as we love our unli-rice that the implementation was almost tantamount to a kick in the balls.

Locally branded smartphones and tablets

Cherry Mobile Sonic 2.0

One of the things that we Filipinos can be thankful for are the smartphones and tablets being offered by our local brands. Most of their products are “rebranded” or “rebadged” ones coming from India, Thailand, or China, but because of this…

Smartphones and tablets can be bought for cheap

Fusion_Breeze

And when I say cheap, I mean dirt cheap. You can actually buy an entry-level 7-inch slate for under Php2,000 and a 4-inch entry-level smartphone for under Php3,000. And no, this is not a sponsored post.

Smartphones can also be bought for the price of a kidney

iphone5s-gold

While I’m not entirely sure about the current kidney prices in the black market, we’re certain that there are smartphones that can be bought for a staggering Php70K in the local grey market. It’s not the Vertu though (that would cost you two pairs of kidneys and a testicle) but one of the first batches of the champagne gold iPhone 5S.

MVP is the highest earning IT executive in the Philippines

Manny_Pangilinan_1

PLDT Chairman, Manny V. Pangilinan, topped our list of last year’s 12 Top-Earning IT/Tech Executives in the Philippines. At that time he has an annual taxable income of Php81.23 million. For a fleeting moment we wished that he’s our ninong.

Active online stores

fb-likes-sulit

The Philippines has a lot of online stores in addition to the already big and popular ones like Sulit, Lazada, and Zalora. They’re also found on social media particularly Facebook and Instagram. Online stores are also one of the most popular channels for Filipinos who want to purchase gadgets below a brand’s asking price. Online sales generate big revenues in the country that it has already attracted the attention of the BIR.

CDR King is the largest privately owned tech retail store.

cdr king

CDR King there’s a reason why it has the word “King” on it’s name, and that is because it’s the largest privately owned tech retail store in the country with over 200 branches nationwide. From being a one stop shop of blank CDs and DVDs, they have expanded their product offerings to include a wide range of other gadgets and accessories. Heck, they even have their own electric scooter, smartphone, and 3D printer.

Filipinos like to watch porn on their mobile phones.

pornhub insights

Yep. According to Pornhub, the Philippines ranked 26th in worldwide traffic to the popular porn site but ranked a solid 15th when it comes to mobile traffic.

CD-R King to offer Google Glass?

$

0

CD-R King, one of the largest media providers in the country, may possibly make the Google Glass available locally, or at least that’s what they’re hinting at on one of the recent post they’ve made on their official Facebook page.

The company has not given any concrete details about the device, when it’s going to be available, and how much they’re planning to retail it once it does hit the shelves. However, they did promise that they’ll provide more information about it soon.

google glass philippines

Another thing that’s not clear here is whether or not they’ll bring in the real deal or just cheap replicas of Google Glass. We’re more inclined towards the latter, albeit we can’t totally rule out the former either.

It’ll be really cool if CD-R King was truly able to bring legit Google Glasses to the country rather than knock-offs. But even if that’s not the case, we think that the replicas are still something to look forward to, just to see how close it is to the real thing.

Remember the photo that was posted by CD-R King’s Facebook page featuring Google Glass? Well, bad news folks.

Sorry to say but the excitement idea of having Google Glass through CD-R King is nothing but fake. The alleged teaser has been removed and disowned by CD-R King’s Facebook page. Here is their statement embedded below:

No details were mentioned whether the posting is intentional or hacked, but at least we now know that the real Google Glass will not land in CD-R King stores.

We’re literally just days away from this year’s Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3), but Microsoft’s Larry Hryb, or more commonly known as Major Nelson, couldn’t wait for the annual trade fair to announce the availability of the drivers that will allow gamers to use their Xbox One controller to their PC.

In his blog, Major Nelson stated that although Microsoft plans to include the driver to one of their upcoming Windows update, he knows that there are a lot of Xbox One users who are dying to have the drivers ASAP, which is why he decided to give them an early treat just before E3 2014.

If your using a PC running on a 64-bit version of Windows, you can download the Xbox One Controller driver though this link. Conversely, you can download the driver for your x86 machine by clicking on this link.

CD-R King, known before as the one-stop-shop for blank media products has grown to become the country’s largest retail chain that offers affordable gadgets ranging from USB products to 3D printers. That being said, take a look at our list of 10 cool gadgets that you can buy from CD-R King.

1. 3D Printer

cdrking 3d printer

3D printers are very popular in the U.S. and it is slowly creeping in in the Philippines. CD-R King jumped on the bandwagon and started selling a 3D printer as well at a not-so-affordable Php100,000 price tag. It probably gets the job done but I’m pretty sure there are more affordable options.

2. 4G LTE pocket WiFi

4G LTE pocket WiFi modems do not come cheap nowadays and would often cost around Php4-5K. CD-R King’s offering, on the other hand, is just Php3,999 and is unlocked too.

The cost of electricity in this country can only go up and probably the most effective way to survive your monthly Meralco bill is to lower your power consumption. One way of doing it is to use products that can harness the power of the sun. The only downside is that serious solar-powered solutions do not come cheap, even from CD-R King.

5. Eco bikes

cdrking eco bike

These Eco bikes are powered by electricity and can go up to 45kph and capable of up to 50km riding distance. Not exactly the fastest way to go from point A to point B but it should save you some gas money. As for the price, let’s just say that flagship smartphones are more expensive.

6. Micro SD Card Reader and SIM card adapter

cdrking sim adapter

This is handy if you find yourself switching smartphones every now and then. This kit comes with three SIM card adapters, a metal pin to eject SIM trays, and a microSD card reader for only Php120.

7. 10-port USB charger adapter

There will always come a time when all your chargers are being used at home and your device will just have to wait for its turn. This USB charger adapter from CD-R King, which costs Php680, will be able to address that as it has ten ports which is also good if you want to hold a charging party.

CD-R King offers a couple of wireless trackers. One is the wireless child tracker while the other one is a wireless car tracker. Both serve the same purpose – it will alert you if your child or car is moving away from your safe zone. Both trackers cost Php1,180.

10. Android TV Box

cdrking mini android tv box

Want to turn your regular HDMI-equipped TV into a Smart TV? This Php1,990 Mini Android TV Box can do that. Just plug it at the back of your TV via HDMI and it will run Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich complete with WiFi connectivity. Five Places Filipinos Love to Buy their Gadgets Offline

$
0
0

More and more Filipinos use the internet to transact since we have more e-commerce sites and online gadget stores. Nevertheless, many still prefer to buy their gadgets first-hand. Here are five places we recommend should you like to take a little tour of the metro to buy your next gadget.

Fiveplacestobuyoffline

Buying a product offline do require a lot of effort – transportaton fares, time, and a lot of patience are key to find that best gadget deal. Holiday season is in full swing, and you might wonder how to spend that hard-earned bonus or thirteenth month pay. Before you proceed, I recommend that you ask yourself with these six questions before you buy a gadget.

Here’s our list in no particular order. Definitely not a paid advertisement.

1. SM Cyberzone (Megamall and SM North EDSA)

SMCyberzone

Photo from SM Cyberzone’s website

While it come as no surprise for many, shopping malls are one of the primary destinations a lot of people go to when they want to buy a gadget. Our malls have evolved over time as they now have dedicated areas just for everything tech: SM has CyberZone which is perhaps the biggest and most widely visited. There are a few more competing ones that cater specifically for the tech-savvy such as Forum Robinsons in EDSA-Pioneer, Mandaluyong.

If you’re on a tight budget and want to purchase a second-hand unit, or want to have your gadget repaired without going to the official service centers, establishments such as Ever Gotesco in Commonwealth and Farmers Plaza in Cubao, both in Quezon City, have floors with kiosks of cellular shops that also offer accessories such as cases and screen protectors, to name a few.

Here’s a tip: We discussed before that concept stores are actually made by the distributors at the request of the brands they carry. While going to a concept store sure do make purchases offline easy, we recommend that you search around for the best deals. Oftentimes, I get products that I want at a lower price on stores that carry a lot of products than the concept stores themselves.

2. Gilmore Avenue in QC

GilmoreAve

If there is one destination I go to when I purchase computer parts, it has to be this place. Gilmore, located in Quezon City, is an IT hub for all things computer-related — cases, motherboards, and other computer peripherals. There are shops that offer discounts if you are a part of an online community (PCHub), and a few that you see also in malls (PC Gilmore). It also helps that the location is easily accessible by public transportation (a few meters away from LRT-2 Gilmore Station), so walking to the stores are quite hassle-free.

Here’s a tip: Don’t get persuaded by promo men giving you brochures and leaflets as soon as you go down the Gilmore LRT Station. Take time to roam around. Lots of stores here do match the price of their competitors, and it’ll help you a lot if you jump from one store to another and use your bargaining skills to compare and lower prices, and get that sweet gizmo deal.

3. Hidalgo Street, Manila

Hidalgo in Quapo is a haven for photography enthusiasts, as the street is famously known for its camera stores that are priced significantly lower than the ones at the malls, partly due to cheaper rental rates and the provision of a local store warranty than the standard one given at mall points of sales. When I was deciding for my DSLR purchase a few months ago, a few of my friends recommended that I visit this area to check out prices.

Here’s a tip: Have someone accompany you here in Hidalgo. Quiapo is not that much of a safe place to roam around, and it is with our utmost recommendation that you wear plain clothes and avoid bringing too much valuables on your trip.

4. V-Mall at Greenhills Shopping Center

greenhillsshoppingcenter

There is no denying that Greenhills Shopping Center is an electronics Mecca for some due to a wide assortment of tech stores and repair shops to boast, claiming its own spot in this list. Stores in this mall can give you the best deals from computer parts to smartphones.

Here’s a tip: Going with your ride? Expect difficulty in parking. Get your haggling abilities ready as well.

5. CD-R King

CDRKing

This is a special place. We can’t point to a specific location/branch because almost all of the 300+ CDR-King shops in the country are equally impressive (much like any of the Iglesia ni Cristo structures).

Rounding up our list is actually a shop infamous for its reputation of selling an assortment of products ranging from ultraportable laptops, e-bikes, smartphones, LED television sets, to even a 3D printer worth a hundred thousand pesos, this store has so many products to offer that even convinced us to list down ten cool gadgets you can buy from them. CD-R King truly lives up to its name as a one-stop place for cheap tech devices. Don’t expect top-notch high quality gadgets though, you may encounter a few defective ones on your purchases. Affordability comes at a price, they say.

Here’s a tip: While we may all agree that we get lemon CD-R King-branded devices once in awhile, I always go to them to purchase a few peripherals from other brands they carry. I find it cheaper to get it here than the other establishments.

How was your last offline purchase? What was the last gadget you bought offline and where? We’d love to have your reactions at the comments section below.

10 Ways to Save on Electricity this Summer

$
0
0

As you might have noticed, it’s already summer. It’s that time of the year when we have to use our air-conditioning units and fans for longer periods. It’s also the opportunity for students who are in their summer vacation to spend more time playing games on their PCs and consoles. Ultimately, this also means a higher electricity bill. And we all know that this takes a big chunk of your budget every month. So if you want to save on electricity this summer, here are ten ways.

1. Unplug all appliances when not in use.

This is probably the most well-known energy saving tip that your parents, even your teachers, have been telling you ever since you were a kid. Switching off your electrical appliances doesn’t always mean that they’re not drawing power due to what we call standby power or vampire power. To make sure, just keep your appliances unplugged when not in use. The same applies to laptops and desktop computers. If you’re not going to use them for hours, just shut it down instead of putting it to sleep to conserve battery. It might be cumbersome for some but it should benefit you in the long run.

2. Use natural light and energy efficient light bulbs.

Open those curtains. One way to save on electricity is to not use light bulbs during the day. If the sun is up just draw those curtains to let more natural light in. You might need to move some furniture like your desk and work areas near the window if you want better illumination.

For light bulbs, you might want to replace incandescent bulbs with more efficient light bulbs like Compact Fluorescents (CFLs), or better yet, with Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs). LEDs are more expensive though but they consume less power and lasts longer. In addition, try to place your bulbs in locations where it can illuminate multiple spaces at the same time. You can also be more efficient by using smaller bulbs in smaller rooms. Lastly, like what is advised in number one, turn off the lights when not in use and clean them every now and then.

3. Use energy efficient air-conditioners/refrigerators.

Air-conditioning units consumes a lot of power that often it makes us think twice of using it more frequently. But if an AC is a must then you might want to consider getting Inverter-equipped models. For comparison, non-Inverter ACs use a fixed speed and fixed amount of power, meaning it starts and stops every time it needs to maintain the desired room temperature. Think of it as a car that can only run on 0 and 60 Kph speeds which is not really efficient.

Inverter AC systems, on the other hand, take advantage of varying compressor speeds to do its job. If the room needs a lot of cooling it will operate at a high-speed to quickly lower the temperature. When the ideal temperature is achieved it will then operate at a lower speed to save power. On the downside, Inverter ACs are more expensive compared to non-Inverter types. But if you have the budget and want to save money on your electricity bill in the long run, then go for Inverter ACs.

4. Improve ventilation.

Aside from utilizing natural light, you can save electricity by improving your house’s ventilation by opening your windows and curtains and allow air to flow freely. This will in turn keep your house cool during the summer. Exhaust fans can also be utilized, although it also consumes electricity, the consumption is lesser compared to an air-conditioner.

5. Clean and maintain your appliances.

Cooling appliances like the air-conditioners, electric fans, and refrigerators need to be regularly cleaned and kept in good condition if you don’t want them to consume more power than normal. ACs and fans need to be cleaned more often as they accumulate dust which in turn hinders their efficiency to keep things cool. If you’re a desktop PC user, the same concept applies. Refrigerators, on the other hand, need to be defrosted regularly as too much frost affects their efficiency. Also check if the refrigerator’s door gasket is still in good working condition to make sure that no air is leaking out.

6. Take note of (EER).

Since we’re already talking about ACs and refrigerators, it pays to take note of an appliance’s EER or Energy Efficiency Ratio when buying one. Look for the Energy Guide label and check the EER. A higher EER value means a more efficient unit and a lower operating cost.

7. Go for DIY solutions.

If you don’t have an AC or the AC takes a big chunk of your monthly electricity bill, you can also opt for DIY solutions. One good example is this homemade AC. Watch the video below.

8. Harness the power of the sun.

Since it’s summer and the skies are mostly clear during the day, you can also save electricity by using the sun as an alternative power source. Solar panels are now available for regular consumers and can be bought in some shops in the Metro. Even CDR-King is selling solar panels and other solar powered gadgets. Solar-powered systems for the home are expensive though but if you have the cash and don’t want to depend on the grid for all of your power needs, solar is a good alternative.

9. Go offline.

This is probably the most boring suggestion of all but it is the most effective. Summer time, especially for students, is a chance to stay at home, play games on their PCs or consoles or watch TV the whole day. But if you want save on electricity then you might as well try to lessen the hours you spend using devices that consumers power. Go offline and get yourselves involved in activities that don’t rely on electricity such as reading, biking, or hanging out with friends. Or you can do number 7.

10. Be efficient.

You can save electricity by being efficient at what you do. Don’t buy a huge AC if you have a small room or don’t use an AC when your fan is enough. If you’re just checking on Facebook or Twitter use your mobile device instead of firing up your PC or laptop. If you’re listening music on your own you can use headphones instead of your home speaker systems. If you have few clothes to wash do it by hand instead of using the washing machine. If your home appliances or gadgets have power saving features, use them. And as our moms used to say, don’t leave the refrigerator’s door open for too long.

And that sums it up. I’m sure there are more ways to save electricity so if you have something in mind that is not included in the list, feel free to share them below.
